Concerts and Special Events

** Thursday and Friday, November 20 and 21 at 8 p.m., Wien Experimental Theatre at the Quick Center for the Arts **
Tings Dey Happen was written and is performed by Dan Hoyle , who developed it based on a year he spent in Nigeria in 2005-2006 as a Fulbright scholar. Charlie Varon directs.

Hoyle refers to Tings Dey Happen in an article written for Salon, as "The fine art of battling oil addiction... I play more than a dozen Nigerian characters including militants, ganja sellers and prostitutes, as well as a handful of Westerners, to tell the story of life on the volatile West African oil frontier." The play is an honor to these people and a hope that the stories stay with the audience after it leaves the theater. Tings Dey Happen won the 2007 Will Glickman Award for Best New Play in San Francisco, where it ran for six months. It followed that success with a five-month run in New York City at The Culture Project. Fairfield University's Quick Center for the Arts and University College have collaborated to present this unique theatrical event. Tickets are $25.

The Fairfield University Glee Club under the direction of Dr. Carole Ann Maxwell presents the popular Christmas Pops Concert.

Friday, December 12 at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.,
Béla Fleck & the Flecktones bring special guest The Alash Ensemble with The Holiday Tour for two shows. Béla Fleck & the Flecktones have been perfecting a dynamic hybrid of bluegrass, jazz and pop for more than 15 years and have practically created their own genre. Fans of the jam-band scene have embraced the ensemble for their virtuoso musicianship and mastery of improvisation. Their eclectic range is daunting, but it's all fair game in the limitless musical unive4rse of the Flecktones. Tickets are $50, $45.

New Haven Symphony Orchestra with Gerald Steichen , Associate Conductor leading the orchestra in a blaze of holiday merriment with surprises galore! Celebrate the season with an enchanting blend of holiday favorites. Tickets are $40, $35.

Jules Massenet's Thaïs with Renée Fleming playing the Egyptian courtesan in search of spiritual sustenance. Thomas Hampson is the monk who falls from grace. Massenet's sensual score is presented in a new Metropolitan Opera production that was originated at Lyric Opera of Chicago by John Cox. Tickets are $22, $20 seniors, $15 children/students. University College's Inspired Writers Series in collaboration with the World Affairs Forum of Stamford, Conn. welcomes Pulitzer Prize-winning author Samantha Power , the Anna Lindh Professor of Practice of Global Leadership and Public Policy at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. Cited as one of the "75 Most Influential People of the 21st Century," Esquire acknowledges her contributions to the foreign policy debate and her work getting mass atrocities and the human face of foreign policy choices embedded into the public consciousness. The Adolph and Ruth Schnurmacher Lecture in Judaic Studies features Dianne Ashton , professor of philosophy and religion; director of American studies, Rowan University. Dr. Ashton's topic is, "Quick to the Party: Jews and the Americanization of Hanukkah." The lecture is made possible by a gift from the Adolph and Ruth Schnurmacher Foundation. Young Audience Sunday Series And Artsbound

Sunday, December 21 at 1 p.m. & 3 p.m., Quick Center for the Arts
Theatreworks/USA's production of A Christmas Carol is the classic story filled with holiday spirit (literally) that captures the imagination of all ages. Meet Scrooge, Tiny Tim, Bob Cratchit and all the rest in this heart-warming musical based on the Dickens' classic. The New York Times called it "A thorough delight – inspired, funny and intimate." Tickets are $15 adults, $12 children.

Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery

September 19-December 7, 2008, Quick Center for the Arts
A New Reality: Black-and-White Photography in Contemporary Art , an exhibition of 98 photographic works is derived from a major private collection of photography amassed by New Jersey residents Anne and Arthur Goldstein. A New Reality explores the continued use of black-and-white photography as a medium of visual and historical consequence. The exhibition also reflects the expanding technical and conceptual role of photography, emphasizing its recent adaptation to the complex and psychologically charged images and narratives desired by contemporary artists.

Admission to the gallery is free. The hours are: Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday: Noon to 4 p.m. Closed Monday. The gallery is always open when performances occur at the Quick Center.
