One Day University returns to University College

One Day University, a selection of serious and stimulating learning opportunities returns to University College at Fairfield University on Sunday, June 1 with a back-by-popular-demand bonus course in George Gershwin and his masterpiece, "Rhapsody in Blue" as well as four new lectures focusing on the fascinating and heated topics audiences have come to expect.

The daylong program is held at the Quick Center for the Arts on the Fairfield campus and begins at 9:30 a.m. The fourth lecture, traditionally the final one of a day that ends at 3:45 p.m., will be followed by Fairfield University's Orin Grossman, academic vice president and acclaimed pianist who will cap the day with a lecture and recital, "The Genius of George Gershwin and His Remarkable Masterpiece," which runs from 4-4:50 p.m.

Steven Schragis, co-founder and director of One Day University, described in enthusiastic terms the audience's spontaneous and unanimous reaction to Professor Grossman's original lecture delivered earlier in the season. "The talk included more than just fascinating information - Professor Grossman, who is a concert level pianist, even played a few portions of Gershwin's masterpiece for the audience. And the day ended with a standing ovation!" Schragis confided that this is the only lecture out of hundreds that have been given since One Day University began two years ago that has received such an effusive response. "We are thrilled to reprise Professor Grossman's lecture for the benefit of those who might have missed it the first time."

In addition to Gershwin, One Day University presents lectures on China and the United States; a look at two disparate American groups in the 1930s and how they joined together to fight the Nazi threat to America and the indigenous White Supremacist movement; the crisis of celebrity politics; and the genius of Alfred Hitchcock. The faculty includes Professor John Orman, also of Fairfield University, as well as Professors Alan Wachman of Tufts, Glenda Gilmore of Yale and Annette Insdorf of Columbia. Detailed descriptions of the topics follow.

The fee is $219 and includes lunch. To register for this special June 1 event, visit the website at www.OneDayU.com or call 1-800-811-8821.
