Classic Impressions

The Grammy-nominated Imani Winds , comprised of five unabashedly adventurous yet delightfully accessible musicians, has been enriching the traditional wind quintet repertoire with European, African, Latin American and American music traditions since its inception in 1997. Tickets are $35.

Born of passion and desire, Noche Flamenca was founded in Madrid in 1993 by artistic director Martin Santangelo and his wife, the incomparable Soledad Barrio. The company played in New York City during July and August of this summer and Tobi Tobias' Voice of Dance review gave this haunting description: "The cast members of Noche Flamenca work as a team to provide mounting excitement, but Soledad Barrio is still the one who takes you to places you might never have reached without her, emotional states that bare the toughest truths about human existence." Tickets are $45, $40, $35. ARTSBound tickets are $7.

Saturday, November 8 at 8 p.m., Quick Center for the Arts

The Bacon Brothers have gotten more mileage out of the element of surprise than most other bands. Through countless gigs and five albums, these guys have shown they can play. Kevin Bacon is well known in the acting world, but he is equally dedicated to his musical craft. Kevin and older brother Michael are lifelong musicians. It is part of the reason why they've become so good at turning heads and tweaking ears. Tickets are $50, $45, $40.

With precision, sensitivity and unity of ensemble, The Aquila Theatre Company articulates the human essence inherent in classical drama. The Comedy of Errors is one of Shakespeare's most vibrant and sparkling comedies. Brilliant comedy abounds in this witty tale of mistaken identity, assumed personas hilarious machinations and whimsical family ties. Tickets are $30. ARTSBound tickets are $7.

Thursday and Friday, November 21 and 22 at 8 p.m., Wien Experimental Theatre at the Quick Center for the Arts

Tings Dey Happen written and performed by Dan Hoyle was developed and directed by Charlie Varon. The play is a distillation of the Niger Delta as the playwright experienced it. Many of the characters are composites, the monologues a blend of several people's words. The play is an honor to these people and a hope that the stories stay with the audience after it leaves the theater. Tings Dey Happen won the 2007 Will Glickman Award for Best New Play in San Francisco, where it ran for six months. It followed that success with a five-month run in New York City at The Culture Project. Fairfield University's Quick Center for the Arts and University College have collaborated to present this unique theatrical event. Tickets are $25.

Lectures

Thursday, November 13 at 7:30 p.m., Dolan School of Business Dining Room

Father Daniel Groody, C.S.C., assistant professor of theology and director of the Center for Latino Spirituality and Culture, Institute for Latino Studies at the University of Notre Dame, delivers a lecture entitled, "Dying to Live: A Theology of Migration?" This event is sponsored by Fairfield University's Center for Faith and Public Life in partnership with the Notre Dame Club of Fairfield County. Admission is free.

Tuesday, November 18 at 7:30 p.m., Dolan School of Business Dining Room

The Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies presents Ruth Langer , associate professor of Jewish Studies in Theology and academic director of the Center for Christian-Jewish Learning at Boston College. Langer will speak on People of the Book: The Bible in Jewish Life and Liturgy. Complimentary admission with limited seating. Met Live In HD

Sunday, November 9 at 1 and 6 p.m., Quick Center for the Arts - Met Premiere (Encore Performances)

Director Penny Woolcock makes her Met debut directing John Adams' Doctor Atomic , a contemporary masterpiece about a momentous episode of modern history: the creation of the atomic bomb. Baritone Gerald Finley plays J. Robert Oppenheimer with Alan Gilbert conducting. Open seating. Tickets are $22 general, $20 seniors, $15 children/students.

Saturday, November 22 at 1 and 7 p.m., Quick Center for the Arts - New Production ( Encore Performance at 7 p.m.)

Hector Berlioz's contemplation of good and evil, La Damnation de Faust , is interpreted by Robert Lepage, one of theater's most imaginative directors. Marcello Giordani stars in the title role opposite Susan Graham as Marguerite and John Relyea as Méphistophélès. James Levine conducts this rarely staged masterwork. Open seating. Tickets are $22 general, $20 seniors, $15 children/students.

The Plant that Ate Dirty Socks introduces messy Michael who finds it impossible to keep his room clean. But when he and his neatnik brother get a new plant, all of his stinky socks mysteriously disappear, as his horticultural wonder gets taller and taller. A hysterical botanical musical based on Nancy McArthur's best-selling books that children from grades 3-7 will enjoy. Tickets are $15 adults, $12 children. ARTSBound tickets are $7.

Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery

September 19-December 7, 2008, Quick Center for the Arts

A New Reality: Black-and-White Photography in Contemporary Art , an exhibition of 98 photographic works is derived from a major private collection of photography amassed by New Jersey residents Anne and Arthur Goldstein. A New Reality exploresthe continued use of black-and-white photography as a medium of visual and historical consequence. The exhibition alsoreflects the expanding technical and conceptual role of photography, emphasizingits recent adaptation to the complex and psychologically charged images and narratives desired by contemporary artists.

Admission to the gallery is free. The hours are: Tuesday-Saturday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Sunday: Noon to 4 p.m. Closed Monday. The gallery is always open when performances occur at the Quick Center.
