Fairfield University's New Media Program announces award winners of CineFest Fairfield

On May 3, Fairfield University's New Media: Film, Television and Radio Program in association with the Community Theater of Fairfield presented CineFest Fairfield, an annual event since 2005 that is held at the Community Theater of Fairfield on the Post Road. The film festival recognizes the importance and the influence media has on society and offers the public, free of charge, an opportunity to view short independent films by local and international students and Fairfield's faculty.

Six awards were presented to Fairfield alumni and seniors at CineFest Fairfield 2007 in the following categories:

The New Media major is within the department of Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) and seeks to give students a broad understanding of the expressive power of media, and the ability to experiment with their own creative voices.

The program offers courses in theory, history, genres, styles, and structures, as well as hands-on production courses, all taught at the Media Center, a 15,000-square-foot space with two well-equipped studios, 14 editing suites, screening and digital imaging rooms and classrooms.

In April 2006, Fairfield University's Media Center acquired its much-in-demand satellite uplink truck. The new technology makes it possible for the Jesuit and Catholic university to reach far beyond its borders, even worldwide, by transmitting its signal to a geostationary satellite in space. The acquisition of the satellite uplink offers students the opportunity to work with cutting-edge technology rarely seen on university campuses.

The program also features three Jesuit priests - who have worked in film professionally for years and have won several film awards - as full time faculty including Fr. James Mayzik, S.J., director of the program and Media Center, Fr. Mark McGregor, S.J., and Fr. Mark Scalese, S.J.
