The Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts presents the final Director's Choice brown-bag lecture of the season on Wednesday, April 18 from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Artist Suzanne Chamlin, whose work is currently on display in the exhibit - "Painting the Landscape and Other Views" - will discuss her work and her artistic process. Admission is $5 and participants are encouraged to bring lunch and beverages.

Diana Mille, Ph.D., director of the Walsh Art Gallery, has invited Chamlin, whose exhibit opens April 12 and runs until May 27, to speak about her work and her unique creative process. As co-author of a text on the 19th century American painting movement called Tonalism, Dr. Mille is on record as being partial to the painting style and she notes that Chamlin successfully blends, what she describes as, "an incredible tonalist sensibility" with a specifically contemporary approach "through her unique aesthetic conversation with nature."

The pieces in the exhibition are both paintings and drawings. The paintings feature landscapes that have been recently completed as well as some from the past. The artist explains that the referral to, "Other Views" in the exhibition title, "also refers to the way that my recent landscapes are constructed." In working on variations of the subject, she continues, "the content of the painting becomes as much about color, as it does about the actual 'scene.'"

The drawings, which are ink and ink washes on paper, are created with tones of washes. Chamlin denies that the drawings are preparatory studies for the paintings, "however," she concedes, "my work in drawing over the years definitely informs my paintings and decisions that I make when I work with color."

Chamlin is assistant professor in Studio Art at Fairfield University and teaches Painting and Drawing. She received her M.A. from Yale University in 1989 and her B.A. from Barnard College in 1985. Her works are in collections in the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., The Yale University Art Gallery and the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City. Her paintings and drawings have been shown in group exhibitions and in solo exhibitions at galleries in New York City, New Jersey, Kansas City and at Fairleigh Dickinson University.

Dr. Mille designed the popular Director's Choice lecture series as a vehicle by which students of all ages might spend a lunchtime hour in the pleasant and, often provocative, gallery surroundings and enrich their body of knowledge in a multitude of subtleties that accompany the study of contemporary art. The lecture series will resume in the fall of 2007.
