Quick Center for the Arts presents MOMIX

On Friday, March 16 at 8 p.m., MOMIX, the phenomenal company of dancer-illusionists, will take the stage at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts with "Lunar Sea," a magical creation that company founder Moses Pendleton describes as a ballet that appears to be performed, "as if you were witnessing it on the moon with one-sixth of the Earth's gravity." There will be a post-show "Art to Heart" Q & A with the company following the performance.

MOMIX is internationally known for presenting works of exceptional inventiveness and physical beauty. It freely mixes classical ballet, modern dance, and gymnastics with theater illusion.

"Lunar Sea" is a procession of dreamlike sequences performed mostly in black light, with glowing phosphorescent shapes rather than identifiable human forms. One reviewer called it an "eye-popping and mind-boggling production (that) suggests that the moon is a jolly place with lots of cool nightlife."

Pendleton combines his well-known acrobatic choreography with whimsical puppets, costumes designed to maximize the desired illusions and lighting effects using black-light, a design element that enables dancers to alternately glow in the dark, vanish back into it, swim, float on air and much more. "Lunar Sea" is a theatrical illusion that celebrates the joy of spectacle.
