College students invited to National Face AIDS Conference at Fairfield University

Stephen Lewis, an international leader in the fight against AIDS, will be the keynote speaker at the National Face AIDS Conference when it opens on Friday, Feb. 23 at Fairfield University. Regarded as one of the top 100 public speakers in the world, Mr. Lewis, who is the former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa, leader of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative and former Deputy Director of UNICEF, will speak in Gonzaga Hall Auditorium at 7 p.m.

The Saturday session opens with Evon Lyon, M.D., a doctor with Partners in Health in Haiti since 1997. By working to promote the development of high quality, permanent health care infrastructure in Haiti, Dr. Lyon advances the health and dignity of the people he calls his "human family."

There will also be a special taped message from Dr. Jeffrey Sachs author of "The End of Poverty: Economic Possibilities for our Time." Students will then have the opportunity to select from workshops on "Vulnerable populations and AIDS," "AIDS in the Media," and "HIV Care and Treatment."

A panel on The Emergence of Treatment Programs in Resource Poor Settings is followed by lunch. The afternoon sessions are devoted to skills-based leadership training for Face AIDS organizers, including leadership and management and event planning and fundraising. Fairfield University is just a 45-minute train ride from New York City. Students traveling from other schools will be hosted by Fairfield students and food will be provided for the duration of the conference. Partial travel stipends are available to a limited number of students. To register, please go to: http://www.faceaids.org/conference/
