Jesuit priest from the University of Central America in El Salvador to receive honorary degree from Fairfield University

Image: Father Dean Brackley Father Dean Brackley, S.J., Ph.D. whose ministry has led him from Manhattan's Lower East Side and the South Bronx to the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA) in El Salvador, Central America, will speak at Fairfield University and receive an honorary doctor of laws degree on Wednesday, Feb. 15, at 4 p.m. in the Kelley Theatre of the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. At UCA he teaches theology and ethics and does pastoral work in an urban community.

The UCA is where Salvadoran armed forces in 1989 killed six Jesuit priests, including the University president, and their housekeeper and her daughter.

Fr. Brackley says "we need to ask how we can shape our universities to respond more faithfully ... to an unjust world, in a manner analogous to what the martyrs of the UCA did."

In the 1970s and '80s, Fr. Dean Brackley worked in social ministry and popular education on Manhattan's Lower East Side and in the South Bronx. He taught briefly at Fordham University (1989-90) before joining the staff of the UCA.
