Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield University offers summer courses for students and teachers

The Connecticut Writing Project at Fairfield University (CWP) announced its 2006 Summer Programs, including a writing institute for middle and high school students, programs for teachers instructing grades 2 through 12 and an advanced writing institute for teachers hoping to hone their own writing skills.

The Young Writers' Institute , which will be held from Monday, July 10, through Friday, July 21, is a team-taught program open to middle and high school students. Exemplary, credentialed local teachers who are CWP teacher/consultants will guide students as they explore the many aspects of writing, create new works, discuss the craft with published authors and share their work with others. The program meets daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. with lunch provided. Transportation will be available from Greenwich, Wilton, Newtown, Milford and points closer to Fairfield University.

To apply, students must submit an application, a writing sample and a teacher recommendation. Tuition is $700 with partial scholarships available. The deadline is Monday, May 1.

Literature Institute: Responding to Texts , scheduled for Monday, July 10, through Friday, July 21, is geared to teachers of grades 7 through 12 and will explore how reading different genres affects the ways readers respond to literary text and strategies for connecting literature to writing and helping students become more thoughtful readers. The facilitators are Susanne Conklin, an English teacher at Scarsdale High School, and John Chiappetta, an English teacher at Staples High School. The sessions run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the fee is $495. Credit is available.

Exploring Writing Craft , scheduled for Monday, July 10, through Friday, July 21, is an institute exploring theory and best practices for teaching writing to students in grades 2 through 5. The program will be facilitated by Kathy Brody, a CWP teacher/consultant and faculty member of the Teachers College Writing Project, who recently helped her class win first place in the highly competitive Scholastic, Inc. national writing contest. This institute will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the tuition fee is $495. Credit is available.

Exploring the Theory and Practice of Writing , to be held from Monday, July 17, through Friday, July 28, is designed for teachers in grades 7 through 12 and will explore voice in writing, analytic thought, genres and encouraging the reluctant writer. The facilitator is Kristin Veenema, a Trumbull High School English teacher, and Joel Edminster, an English teacher at Rye High School. This institute will run daily from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and tuition is $495. Credit is available.

The Advanced Writing Institute , scheduled for Monday, July 24, through Friday, July 28, offers teachers time to recharge and work on their own writing, including stories, poems and essays. Participants are given time for creation, feedback and revision in these sessions, led by Linda Miller, a retired Pelham, N.Y., teacher now living the "writer's life" in upstate New York. The institute will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily and the tuition fee is $200. No credit is available for this institute, though 2.0 CEUs are available.
