Famed West African drummer Henry Jones to present workshop to Bridgeport music teachers

Famed West African drummer Henry Jones will present a workshop on African drumming to Bridgeport music teachers on Tuesday, November 8, from 9:30-11:30 a.m. in Bellarmine 113 on Fairfield University's campus. This event is NOT open to the public, but reporters and photographers are welcome to attend.

The workshop consists of several topics, including how to introduce world music to youth, world instruments, and West African drumming. It is made possible by a 2003 grant from the U.S. Department of Education, facilitated by Fairfield University and Laura Nash, Ph.D., assistant professor of music.

Henry Jones is a master drummer in African drum and dance instruction. Passionate about world music, he has studied traditional music from Africa; Bali, Indonesia; India and the Caribbean, among other regions. His company, Infinite Roots, focuses on introducing world music and West African drumming to children and adults and is currently providing instruction to more than 300 students in Fairfield County and Westchester County.

"The beauty of American society is continually being taken for granted," said Jones, who is also a writer and photographer. "America is and always has been the melting pot of the world. There are so many types of people and cultural practices which are here and alive in our own societies."

The workshop will also be attended by Bridgeport superintendent John Ramos.
