Theatre Fairfield starts its 2004-05 season with classic Greek comedy "The Birds" | Press Releases

Theatre Fairfield, the producing organization of the Theatre Program at Fairfield University, is pleased to announce its first play of the 2004-05 season: Aristophanes' "The Birds." This ancient Greek comedy, which speaks to many contemporary American political issues, will run from Wednesday, Oct. 27 through Saturday, Oct. 30, at 8 p.m. and Oct. 30 and 31 at 2 p.m. in the Wien Experimental Theatre in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts.

"The Birds" is being presented this season in conjunction with "Photographs of the Athenian Acropolis: The Restoration Project," an exhibit running through Sunday, December 5, at the Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery at Fairfield University. The play is a hilarious Greek comedy that mocks all elements of society. The Theatre Fairfield production will be a humorous interpretation of current politics, worldly affairs, and the need for a better civilization to live in. Peter Meineck's translation of the play has more of a contemporary feel to it as the main characters of Goodhope and Makemedo travel to a new land in search of the leader of the birds, The Hoopoe. It is here where they start their comical journey towards the better society they have been yearning to find.

Theatre Fairfield's resident director, Martha Schmoyer LoMonaco, Ph.D, chair of Visual and Performing Arts, is directing the production. She is joined by guest scenic designer Matt Maraffi, lighting designer Lynne Chase, and costume designer Kim Gill. Kevin Carroll and Nick Smaligo will portray the main characters, leading a 19-member ensemble through this amusing political satire.
