"Vanya on 42nd Street" to be screened at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts | Press Releases

"Vanya on 42nd Street," legendary director Louis Malle's last film, will be screened Monday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. The film is the fourth of six being shown as part of the Quick Center's ongoing Russian Arts and Letters Festival.

This stirring and unusual work reunites the award-winning French director with Andre Gregory and Wallace Shawn, who wrote and starred in his acclaimed 1981 film "My Dinner with Andre." In this film, Shawn and Gregory are participants in a years-long effort to mount a production of Anton Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya" every few months for friends, all the while considering the worthiness of their endeavor.

The actors, including a young Julianne Moore as Yelena, wear street clothes and do a full run through the text, which was translated by award-winning film and stage director/writer David Mamet. The result lies somewhere between a documentary about acting and a narrative feature that remains cinematically compelling and entertaining throughout.
