Fairfield University's Danbury campus features web-enhanced courses for fall semester

Fairfield University's University College, formerly the School of Continuing Education, will offer four courses at its Danbury Campus this fall.

Two of the courses, "Introduction to Managerial Accounting" and "Introduction to Probability and Statistics," will be Web-enhanced.

"They don't have as many class meetings because some of the work is done on the Web," said Marge Glick, associate dean for credit programs at University College.

The accounting course, which will run seven Tuesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., provides students with an understanding of the role of accounting information in managerial decision-making. The probability and statistics course, which will also run on seven Tuesdays, later in the semester, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., is an introduction to the theory of statistics. The course includes measures of central tendency, variance, Chebyshev's theorem, probability theory, binomial distribution, normal distribution, the central limit theorem and estimating population means for large samples.

Also available at the Danbury Campus is "Introduction to Macroeconomics" and "Legal Environment of Business," both of which will run Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. For seven weeks, the economics course develops a model of the aggregate economy to determine the level of output, income, prices and unemployment in the economy. The international sector is incorporated into the model, reflecting the importance of international trade in today's economy.

"Legal Environment of Business" is a basic study of the law, legal institutions and the legal and social responsibility of business. It includes legal history and legal process, judicial systems, common law, statutes and regulations, with an emphasis on torts, contracts, antitrust and trade regulation, protection of the environment, worker safety, product liability and corporate crime.

The Danbury Campus is located at the offices of Cendant Mobility Services Corp. on Apple Ridge Road, about a mile from the Danbury mall. Cendant first invited Fairfield to offer classes at its site in 2000 in order to train its own employees - however the classes are open to the public.

Fairfield is also running its first course in its Advanced Professional Certificate in Communication program. That course is open only to Cendant employees.
