Hubbard Street Dance Chicago leads off Quick Center's Dance America Series

Image: Hubbard Street Dance An innovative force in contemporary dance, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago (HSDC) leads off the Dance America Series at Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts on Friday, Oct. 12 at 8 p.m. A pre-performance "Art to Heart" discussion with James Vincent, HSDC artistic director, takes place at 7 p.m.

One of the most renowned dance companies in America, HSDC was founded in 1977 by veteran dancer and choreographer Lou Conte. Today, 20 culturally diverse dancers combine theatrical jazz with both modern and classical ballet techniques to create an unparalleled artistic style with a distinctive repertoire.

From its inception HSDC has captured public attention and garnered local, national and international acclaim. With four public television specials, including two that aired nationally, the company has enlightened and entertained audiences of all backgrounds, making dance accessible to a variety of audiences. After viewing the company's television debut in 1981, Fred Astaire called the performance "some of the greatest dancing I've seen in years."

In March 1998, HSDC officially merged with the Lou Conte Dance Studio (LCDS), their unofficial partner for years, and relocated to a permanent facility in Chicago's West Loop area. Now one institution, they are dedicated to performance, dance training and community education.

The company and its distinctive repertoire serve as a living archive for significant works by choreographers: Nacho Duato, Daniel Ezralow, Jiri Kylian, Kevin O'Day, Margo Sappington and Twyla Tharp. In addition, HSDC regularly collaborates with emerging American choreographers on new dance works.

The State of Illinois presented the troupe with the Governor's Award, and several company members have won Ruth Page Awards from the Chicago Dance Coalition for their outstanding work. Last year they toured in 17 cities in this country, sponsored a winter tour in Brazil and had a three-week engagement at Chicago's Shubert Theatre.

Tickets to the performance are $38, $33, and $28, with discounts available for seniors, students and groups. For reservations or more information, call the box office at (203) 254-4010 or toll free at 1-877-ARTS-396.
