Fairfield University's Bennett Lecture Series hosts Dr. Paula Hyman

Image: Paula Hyman Dr. Paula E. Hyman will be the guest speaker at Fairfield University's Judaic Studies Lecture Series on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 7:30 p.m., in the university's Charles F. Dolan School of Business. Her topic is: "Confronting Otherness: Jewish Women in Preholocaust Poland."

Dr. Hyman is the Lucy Moses Professor of Modern Jewish History and the chairperson of the Judaic Studies Program at Yale University. A graduate of both the Hebrew College of Boston and Radcliffe College, she received a master's degree and Ph.D. from Columbia University where she taught Jewish history for several years.

A specialist in the modern period, Dr. Hyman has devoted her research to two areas, the history of French Jewry and Jewish women's history. She is the author of several books, the latest of which, "The Jews of Modern France," was published in 1998. She is also co-editor of the two-volume "Jewish Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia," which received the Dartmouth Medal Award and the Barbara Dobkin Award in Jewish Women's Studies from the National Jewish Book Awards.

Dr. Hyman serves as the chairperson of the Academic Council of the National Foundation for Jewish Culture, as a Fellow and Vice-President of the American Academy of Jewish Research and a member of the AJS Board of Directors. She has also taught at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America where she served as dean of the Seminary College of Jewish Studies. She lectures frequently in a variety of academic and communal settings.

Dr. Hyman's lecture is free and open to the public, but reservations are suggested. The event is sponsored by Fairfield University's Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies, under the direction of Ellen M. Umansky, Ph.D., and the Schnurmacher Foundations.
