Suzanne Uzzilia of Acra, N.Y., who graduated magna cum laude from Fairfield University in May, has been awarded a Fulbright to Korea, where she will be teaching English at the secondary level.

An English major with a minor in education, Suzanne was a University Fellows Scholar and a Dean's List student at Fairfield, where she was in the Honors Program. She studied at Regent's College in London during the spring semester of her junior year.

Suzanne will be bringing broad teaching experiences to her position, including substitute teaching for kindergarten through twelfth grade in all subjects and interning as a bilingual teacher in an elementary school. In addition she has been a tutor/therapist for an autistic child and was a reader for a visually-impaired college student.

Suzanne served with the Appalachian Volunteer Corps, Hunger Cleanup, the Sunshine Kids, a group of youngster whose families have been impacted by AIDS, and the McGivney Center for inner city children. She was president of Circle K and is a member of Sigma Tau Delta, an international English honor society.

Fairfield University announced three Fulbright awards to members of the Class of 2001, bringing to 26 the number of Fulbrights awarded to its graduates since 1993. Suzanne's classmates, Angela Scardina of Kittanning, Pa., and Julia Tsisin of New Haven, Conn., will be going to Austria and Russia respectively.

The U.S. Congress created the Fulbright Program in 1946, immediately after World War II, to foster mutual understanding among nations through educational and cultural exchanges. Senator J. William Fulbright, sponsor of the legislation, saw it as a step toward building an alternative to armed conflict. Today the Fulbright Program is the U.S. Government's premier scholarship program, enabling U.S. citizens to gain international competence in an increasingly interdependent world.
