Second-year nurse anesthesia residents in the Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies celebrated the start of their clinical education during a capping ceremony this summer.

The occasion marked the first in-person meeting for the doctoral cohort, which extends across Fairfield University’s campuses in Austin, Texas and Fairfield, Conn.

The annual capping ceremony recognized 42 nurse anesthesia residents and their transition from classroom instruction to hands-on clinical practice. It acknowledged students’ dedication and readiness to begin practicing in clinical settings while applying the knowledge and skills they have developed during the first year of the doctoral program.

A Milestone in Professional Formation

Attendees were welcomed by Patricia Simino Boyce, PhD, RN, dean of the Egan School, who emphasized the significance of the ceremony: “There is a moment in every clinician’s formation when preparation meets purpose, when the knowledge carried in your mind and the skill built in your hands becomes something more. Today is that moment.”

“Wear your cap with pride,” she continued. “Let it remind you of what you have earned, what you have promised, and what you are becoming. The Egan community stands behind you today and in every room you will ever enter.”

One Fairfield Across Two Campuses

The ceremony underscored Fairfield’s commitment to providing a unified educational experience across campuses, fostering a shared sense of community while preparing future certified registered nurse anesthetists to deliver safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care.

By bringing the Austin-based students to Connecticut, the University created an opportunity for students and faculty from both locations to strengthen the relationships they have developed within the program.

A spirit of collaboration was evident during the entire week, as students engaged in three days of skills training and professional development. The experience gave the cohort additional opportunities to learn together, strengthen competencies, and expand their professional networks.

Fully accredited by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs, the Doctor of Nursing Practice in Nurse Anesthesia degree program at Fairfield Egan is ranked #60 nationally by U.S. News & World Report.
