Program Overview

The Educational Technology program—offered online and in blended format—welcomes potential candidates from all teaching disciplines as well as those contemplating a career change or an enhancement to their existing professional skills.

Program candidates often work as teachers, co-teachers, and consultants in schools, agencies, and professional development organizations in and out of the field of education.

The Master of Arts in Educational Technology is designed to create leaders in the field who can model, use, and provide learning experiences to others regarding best technology-infused educational practices.

K-12 classroom teachers can add the MA or a Sixth-Year Certificate to their existing graduate degrees. The MA in Educational Technology with School Library Specialization is also offered as a K-12 cross-endorsement for certified teachers

The online 12-credit certificates are designed for professionals seeking learning opportunities in one of three areas: Classroom Technology Integration, Leadership in Educational Technology, and Learning Design and Technology.

Graduates of the program will be able to:

  • Position themselves as district and school leaders in designing and supporting 21st century learning environments.
  • Participate in and foster a shared vision for the effective integration of technology in their educational environment.
  • Work with educators to design, develop, implement, and evaluate technology-embedded learning and assessment experiences for students that optimizes learning as well as incorporates the teaching of 21st century skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of and be able to apply all relevant education and educational technology standards.
  • Develop and implement relevant and appropriate professional development to meet the needs of teachers and administrators related to technology integration.
  • Provide the teachers and administrators with knowledge to be able to foster and guide their own professional growth.
  • Apply technology to meet the needs of a diverse school population.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of emerging classroom technologies as well and be able to evaluate their effectiveness for use in the classroom.

This course introduces students to the concepts and practices of Open Educational Resources. Students will explore copyright law, fair use exemptions, and Creative Commons licensing as well as the benefits of Open Educational Resources and Open Pedagogy to teaching and learning.

MD 465 01 - Emerging Technologies: Building and Publishing Online Books

Despite what some futurists predicted a decade or two ago, "books" as we know them have not disappeared but, like most methods of communications challenged by new technologies, have instead adapted themselves to the world of Kindles, smartphones, and iPads. In this hands-on course, students will work with the latest tools for building online publications and ePub books, from the most basic picture books to novels and multimedia texts, as well as examine the links between pre-computer "interactive" books and the digital capabilities that exist today. By the end of the course, students will be familiar with a number of programs and apps, and fully capable of publishing their own books that can be sold online and read access a wide range of devices.

MD 465 02- Emerging Technologies: Unpacking the New ISTE Standards

The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) released the updated Student Standards in 2016 and followed with the updated Educator Standards in 2017. Each of these releases was preceded by a great deal of input and subsequent revision by a substantial amount of educators representing all levels. The revised standards present boundless possibilities, but what exactly are those possibilities? In this course, students will unpack both the student and the educator standards. Questions we will tackle include: What are they? What do they mean? How can they guide my teaching? Students will create their own technology-rich ISTE Standards teaching units. Technology tools will include both online tools as well as physical books like student devices, 3D photography, virtual reality and some robotics.

As the need to teach 21st century skills becomes increasingly important, so does the need for educational technologists who can instruct educators in the methods for using technology to foster these skills. The Master of Arts (MA) and Sixth Year Certificate (SYC) in the Educational Technology program are designed to create leaders in the field who can use, model, and provide learning experiences that are practical and tied to recognized national standards. The program features online and traditional courses as well as summer residency electives that meet the needs of working professionals.

Our program provides opportunities to learn how to use the most current educational technologies as well as strategies for how to best implement them in the classroom. Our diverse and innovative program will allow you to build a course of study that addresses your area of interest, whether you are:

  • Seeking to improve your own classroom technology skills
  • Seeking opportunities to teach best practices in educational technology to other educators
  • Pursuing cross-endorsement in school library media
  • Pursuing a leadership role in the educational technology field
  • Seeking to develop technology-rich trainings and professional developments outside of the education field

It has been an exciting year for the Educational Technology program as we now have three new entirely online professional certificates:

  • Classroom Technology Integration
  • Leadership in Educational Technology
  • Learning Design and Technology

These are in addition to our current online and hybrid Master of Arts, Sixth-Year Certificate, and Library Media Specialist Cross-Endorsement programs.

We also hosted our 2nd Annual Educational Technology Collaboration Day in the spring, where more than 100 educators from around the state, along with representatives from educational technology organizations such as Apple, CTETL and CECA/CASL, shared ideas for using technology in the classroom. The open forum format allowed all attendees to get a glimpse of how colleagues are incorporating new and creative tech-based into their curriculum, and offered a welcome opportunity for networking and exchange of ideas.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for the M.A. in Educational Technology must hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university (or the international equivalent) and give promise of meeting the standards set by the School.

Formal Admission Process

Students seeking admission must submit:

  • A completed online application
  • A Non-refundable $60 application fee paid by credit card.
  • A Professional Resume. Applicants are required to submit a current resume that includes employment and education history (submit online).
  • An Admission Essay. Students should describe why they want to undertake graduate studies in TESOL  (submit online).
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended demonstrating a cumulative GPA of at least 2.67 (or receive a GPA waiver from the department, available on a case by case basis). You must hold a bachelor's degree with an approved subject major or interdisciplinary major. (All foreign transcripts must be evaluated by an approved evaluating service.
  • Two Recommendation Forms and Letters, one of which must be, preferably, from a current employer or supervisor. The Recommendations are completed online. At the time of application you will need to provide your two Recommender's names and e-mail addresses.
  • Participation in an Admission Interview.


Students from Non-English Speaking Countries

Students from non-English speaking countries are required to submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score report. A TOEFL composite score of 550 for the paper test, 213 for the computer-based, or 84 on the Internet-based test (iBT) with a minimum score of 21 in reading and 23 in writing is strongly recommended for admission. Fairfield's ETS code is 3390.

What kind of undergraduate degree do I need to apply?

The Educational Technology program is designed to accommodate a variety of students from different backgrounds; students are encouraged to apply if they feel that training in education, educational technologies, or educational video production would further their personal, academic, and career goals.

What are the application requirements?

The Educational Technology program is designed to accommodate a variety of students from different backgrounds; students with a variety of undergraduate backgrounds are encouraged to apply if they feel that training in education, educational technologies, and applications would further their personal, academic, and career goals.


How long does it take to complete the MA in Educational Technology degree program?

Students who attend full-time take 9 credits each Fall and Spring semester and up to 6 credits in the summer sessions. For full-time students who start in the Fall semester, the program can be completed in about 2 years. For students who attend part time, the time will vary based on how many courses are taken at a time. Students are required, however, to complete their degree within six years after they begin their first course.


When are courses offered?

Required courses are offered in the fall and spring in an online format. Elective courses are offered as week-long intensives on campus in the summer.


Do I have to be a full-time student?

Our programs are designed to accommodate students who want to attend part time because most of our students are working at least part time.


How are the M.A. courses structured?

Most Educational Technology courses blend hands-on digital media experience with discussions of educational theory. Some classes use online discussion, chats, blogs, electronic portfolios, and other mechanisms as ways to enhance the course experience. Classes taught fully online use any or all of the above mechanisms to ensure student participation, comprehension, and performance.


What is the tuition for this degree program?

Tuition and fees for Fairfield's graduate programs are available from the Office of the Bursar.


Do I need to take the GRE's?

The GREs are not required. We do look closely at your academic record and other application materials. Generally, we like to see that you have at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA. If your GPA is lower than 3.0 but you would like us to consider your application, you may include with your application a statement that explains your GPA and why you are confident you will be able to maintain the required 3.0 GPA in your graduate studies.


What is the average class size?

We keep our classes small. The typical maximum class size for Educational Technology classes is 18.
