Accelerated Second Degree Nursing

Fairfield University’s Accelerated Second Degree Nursing (ASDNU) program is a 15-month pathway to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN). The full-time, on-campus program is offered in Austin, TX and Fairfield, CT.

Application Process & Requirements

Applications for the ASDNU programs in Austin, TX and Fairfield, CT are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants are encouraged to submit their materials well in advance of the official application deadlines.

  • Completed Online Application Form: Complete the online application. After you have submitted your application, you can use this site to track the status of your application and check if your supporting documents, such as transcripts and recommendations, have been received.
  • Professional resume: Applicants are required to submit a current resume that includes employment and education history.
  • Short essays: All ASDNU applicants are required to write a series of short essays (150-250 words each) in response to prompts posted in the application portal.
  • Official transcripts verifying completion of an undergraduate bachelor's degree. (All international transcripts must be evaluated by an approved evaluating service.) All official transcripts must be sent either electronically to ASDNUadmiss@fairfield.edu or via mail directly from the issuing institution to Fairfield University.
  • Two recommendation forms and letters, with a preference for one from a current employer or supervisor. Recommendations are completed online and you will need to enter the email address of your recommender.

  • Please note that the ASDNU programs in Austin, TX and Fairfield, CT cannot support applicants seeking to study on an F visa.
  • If you are a permanent resident or U.S. citizen who has completed college-level credits outside the U.S., you must submit an official course-by-course evaluation for all international coursework. The evaluation must be submitted by an approved NACES member. WES or ECE is preferred.

Fairfield’s ASDNU programs have a total of three entry points: two in Austin, TX, and one in Fairfield, CT. Please reference the chart below for start terms and application deadlines.

ASDNU applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree with a GPA of 3.0 or higher from an accredited institution before enrolling in the ASDNU program. Prerequisites not completed during the applicant’s previous undergraduate program may be taken at an accredited university or community college; they may also be completed at an accredited online course provider, such as Portage Learning, University of Phoenix, and Grand Canyon University.

Science & Math Prerequisites

Prior to matriculation, all ASDNU applicants must have completed the following courses with a grade of B or higher within the last 10 years:

  • Human Anatomy & Physiology I with lab*
  • Human Anatomy & Physiology II with lab*
  • Microbiology with lab*
  • Chemistry with lab*
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Statistics

* A candidate’s application for the ASDNU program in Fairfield, CT only may be submitted for a final review and decision when three of these four science prerequisites have been completed and transcripts submitted. Candidates to the Austin TX cohorts must have all prerequisites completed in order for a decision to be rendered.

Humanities Prerequisites and General Electives

All ASDNU students must have completed 12 credits (or 4 courses), in any combination, in these subject areas with a grade of C or better.

Applicants must also have completed 36 credits (12 three-credit courses) of general electives.
