Mission and the Liberal Arts in Our Current Moment

Fairfield University is pleased to host the AJCU Arts and Sciences Deans Conference, beginning at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, October 9 and closing at noon on Saturday, October 11. Pre-conference sessions and a buffet lunch will be available on Thursday starting at noon.

Sessions will focus on how we can best elevate, support and serve our faculty, staff and students in a challenging environment for higher education and its economic landscape – all while engaging new intellectual and cultural questions in an era of rapid technological change.

We will feature two voices who will offer their perspectives and spark our conversation.

  • On Friday night America Media’s President and Editor-in-Chief Sam Sawyer, SJ, will reflect on the reverberations of Jesuit education in our culture, as America Media imagines who our graduates are and what they need.
  • On Saturday morning New York Times columnist Ross Douthat will share his observations about the current and future state of religion in America – and how Jesuit schools can play in/intellectually shape this environment.
