The field of Ancient Mediterranean Studies is inherently interdisciplinary. Students discover how contemporary questions and cultures can connect directly to the human experience of living in the Ancient Mediterranean region millennia ago, including connections within and beyond the region. Students are able to customize their course of study with an Individually Designed Major.

Fairfield University Art Museum
The Fairfield University Art Museum (FUAM) offers two galleries for engaging with visual arts: the Bellarmine Hall Galleries and the Walsh Art Gallery. The Bellarmine Hall Galleries house the museum's permanent collection, featuring European and American art, alongside objects from Asia, Africa, and Pre-Columbian cultures. FUAM also hosts special exhibitions showcasing a wide range of art from various periods and cultures.
Caryatid Hair Styling Project
Led by Dr. Katherine Schwab in April 2009, the Caryatid Hairstyling Project tested whether the elaborate coiffures carved into the marble Caryatids—statues of maidens that adorn the South Porch of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis—were based on reality.
The Vincent J. Rosivach Lecture Series
This series in Ancient Mediterranean Studies brings distinguished and innovative scholars to Fairfield University to illuminate the rich history and culture of the ancient Mediterranean world. Honoring Professor Rosivach’s legacy of passionate scholarship and teaching, the series celebrates humanistic inquiry through engaging events ranging from lectures and panels to workshops and classroom presentations.
The historic Plaster Cast Collection comprises over one hundred historic plaster casts representing works of art from ancient Greece and Rome through the Renaissance. It is the largest Parthenon sculpture cast collection in the greater New York City region.
A generous long-term loan of thirteen Greek and Roman coins from the American Numismatic Society is on view in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries.
Built by artist Dwight Franklin and gifted to Fairfield in 2006, this model recreates the western narthex of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, including the Imperial Gate and a ca. 900 C.E. mosaic of an emperor kneeling before Christ. Formerly displayed at The Met, it is now housed in Loyola 14 and viewable by appointment.
Several Greek, Etruscan and Roman objects in marble, terracotta, and glass are on display in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries. These objects constitute a generous long-term loan from the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology.
This 13-by-9-foot mosaic fragment, discovered in a necropolis near ancient Antioch, once bordered a scene of an all-female funerary banquet. On loan from the Worcester Art Museum, it depicts Agora (the marketplace) with her counterpart Eukarpia (Fertility).
