What: "West Meets East". The program features John Rutter's Requiem , written in 1985, and the commissioned world premiere of Child of War , written by the celebrated Korean composer Jin Hi Kim.

Child of War : One of the most iconic photographs taken during the Vietnam War on June 8, 1972 shows a young girl, completely naked, running, arms raised in pleading with her mouth open, wailing at the horror of the napalm attack upon her village by the military forces of the United States. The girl's name is Kim Phuc. The Mendelssohn Choir of Connecticut is proud to be performing  the commissioned world premiere of Child of War, a choralwork based upon thestory of Kim Phuc, the photograph itself, and the life Ms Phuc has lived subsequent to this horrific experience, as contained in her 2001 biography, "The Girl In The Picture: The Story Of Kim Phuc: The Photograph And The Vietnam War" by Denise Chong. Despite all odds, Ms Phuc survived the attack, and despite enormous, ongoing pain, today she is a wife, mother and a United Nations spokesperson and an advocate for women and children in war-torn areas. The music of Child of War is by the celebrated Korean composer and komungo artist, Jin Hi Kim, and commissioned by John Marshall Lee for The Mendelssohn Choir.
