How do you calm a fussy baby?

Occupational therapist/author Jill Mays offers expert tips in bookstore appearance

Image: Jill Mays How do you calm a fussy baby? How do you get a fidgety student to sit still? At what age should a child join an athletic team? Should you consider medicating a child for behavioral reasons?

Occupational therapist and author Jill Mays will speak to these pressing issues - and many more - during a wide-ranging workshop at the Fairfield University Bookstore, 1499 Post Road, Fairfield, on Wednesday, January 25. This event, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions and the Fairfield University chapter of Phi Delta Kappa.

Mays, who has a private practice in Ridgefield, Conn., is the author of Your Child's Motor Development Story (Sensory World, 2011), which explains why movement is critical to a child's emotional and physical well-being. A guide for parents, caretakers and educators, the book describes how movement and sensorimotor exploration establish a foundation for essential learning and health.

The workshop will explore ways to keep kids developmentally on target and off medications and introduce concepts and strategies covered in Mays' book, which covers birth through the elementary years. She will outline specific ways to help children stay organized, manage our multisensory world, become flexible thinkers and develop competence with fine and gross motor skills.
