WVOF 88.5 FM to host Stags basketball themed programming marathon in anticipation for MAAC tournament

Image: WVOF On Thursday, February 24th, WVOF 88.5 FM Fairfield University Radio will be hosting a 12-hour programming marathon in preparation for the Fairfield Stags Basketball Men's and Women's MAAC tournament. This is the first time WVOF will present an entire 12-hour program dedicated to Stags Basketball. The marathon will run from 1:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m., and can be heard on WVOF 88.5 FM, accessed online at www.wvof.org , by clicking on the homepage link "Listen to FM Studio Stream" and is also available on the WVOF Mobile app for the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch in the App store (search WVOF).

A week before the first game of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament, the marathon will kick off WVOF's Stags Championships Week, which will feature special programming each day. The marathon's featured guests will include the current Men's and Women's starting lineup, broadcasters, and writers. Special guests will also include players from the Stags' first National Invitational Tournament, Gene Doris, Fairfield University's Athletic Director, and Fairfield Stags alumni including Dominic DePonte (1949-50), Hall of Famers Joe "Joey D" DeSantis (1975-79), Jerome "Flip" Williams (1976-80), Ralph Rehn (1972-75), 2000 MAAC Player of the Year and All-Time Women's Scorer Gail Strumpf, and more.

The Fairfield Stags are currently in the number one position for the Men's conference, and a win over Marist tomorrow, Wednesday, February 16th, will guarantee the Stags a MAAC Regular Season Championship and an automatic bid in the NIT. This is the first time in program history that they have had back-to-back 20 win seasons. The Women's team is currently in the fourth position in the conference, and was the MAAC runner-up for the 2009-2010 season.

The tournament will be held March 3rd-7th at Webster Bank Arena at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport. The Stags most recently hosted the tournament in 2007, and this year is the last time Fairfield will be hosting the tournament in the foreseeable future. The winner of the tournament will have the MAAC Championship for the 2010-2011 season, and will advance to the NCAA Tournament.

WVOF Staff Advisor David Grazynski is especially thrilled to announce the programming. "I think this is a great undertaking," he said. "WVOF is excited to put together such an in-depth show in order to get listeners excited for the tournament while also being able to look back at the Stags' history with some distinguished alumni. It's going to be a fantastic broadcast."

Ivey Speight, WVOF Sports Director, adds, "This is important, not just for WVOF, but also for Fairfield University. It is not often that you can have a show with not only analysis of the tournament with current players, but also reminisce about historic seasons with the former athletes. Our guests have great stories to tell about their years as Stags , and it is a must-listen for any Fairfield fan."
