"... an Orfeo for the ages." Associated Press

Gluck's "Orfeo ed Euridice" opened Friday, Jan. 9 at the Metropolitan Opera in Mark Morris' dazzling revival starring mezzo-soprano Stephanie Blythe as Orfeo and soprano Danielle de Niese as Euridice and judging by the standing ovation they received and the rave reviews that have been published since, this production will "enter the ranks of legend" in operatic history says the Associated Press. The same cast emerges from the underworld once more on Saturday, Jan. 24 for a live performance that plays in HD at Fairfield University's Quick Center for the Arts at 1:00 p.m. There will be an encore performance the same evening at 7:00 p.m. There is open seating only on a first-come, first-served basis.

The New York Times lauded nearly all aspects of this production: "... James Levine elicits an articulate and majestic performance of this landmark work" and Anthony Tommasini continued his glowing and informative critique, "fanciful and affecting production, which Mr. Morris both directed and choreographed, a roster of dancers in casual modern dress, courtesy of the designer Isaac Mizrahi ... The rising lyric-coloratura soprano Danielle de Niese is lovely, vulnerable and vocally refined as Euridice ... Heidi Grant Murphy ... sings (Amor) with perky vitality and bright tone ... a gravely beautiful chorus of nymphs and shepherds ... turned into a cavalcade of historical figures who watch ... from a three-tiered, semi-circular set, designed by Allen Moyer ... the rich carrying power of (Blythe's) sound, she called to her beloved with a subdued intensity that expressed real and wrenching pain."

As if these accolades were not enough, Tommasini concludes his review of this production and the commanding performance by Blythe by stating simply, "I would hear her sing absolutely anything."

Tickets are $22 general, $20 seniors, $15 students and children and are available by calling the Quick Center Box Office at (203) 254-4010. The toll free number is 1-877-ARTS-396.
