Jazz-driven youth offered July jazz workshop by University College at Fairfield University

Here is a chance for young jazz musicians to be as hot as they want for two weeks in July.

Acclaimed jazz bassist and Fairfield University's Music Program Director Brian Torff offers an instrumental and vocal jazz workshop for middle school and high school students of jazz through University College at Fairfield University, July 7 to 11 and July 14 to 18. Students with an urge to intensify the learning and performing experience may take both sessions. The original registration deadline of June 16 has been extended until June 23.

Students are expected to have at least two years' instrument or vocal experience and must have a basic music reading ability. This popular summer workshop combines jazz instruction, improvisation and theory in an intensive and focused atmosphere. Daily lunches included in tuition provide the Jazz Workshop participants time to relax and solidify evolving friendships.

Students will perform in jazz ensembles and attend classes and workshops in jazz improvisation, theory, rhythm and world music, history of jazz and jazz arranging and composition. On July 11 and July 18, at the culmination of their Jazz Workshop experience, the students will perform in concert at Fairfield's Gonzaga Hall auditorium.

Joining Torff on the faculty is trombonist, bandleader and teacher John Fumasoli and saxophone, piano, clarinet and flute player, Steve Moran. Fumasoli has performed with such artists as Gerry Mulligan, Tony Bennett, Eddie Bert, Cab Calloway, Gerry Niewood, Brian Torff, The Gil Evans Band and Diana Ross to name a few. Moran was director and arranger for the U.S. Naval Band in Great Lakes for two years and has toured with the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. He continues to maintain an active performance and teaching schedule.

Tuition is: one-week session $400; two-week session $720; lunch included.
