The School of Nursing at Fairfield University has been doing outreach programs to Bassick High School from its Health Promotion Center on Washington Avenue for four years. Now, under the 21st Century Lighthouse Grant to the City of Bridgeport Department of Youth Services, the School of Nursing has been subcontracted to provide a Health and Wellness Center that will be located at Bassick High School.

The Health and Wellness Center will be particularly beneficial to residents in the West and South of Bridgeport, but is open to all Bridgeport residents. The Center will operate after school hours, anytime between 3 and 10 p.m., and programs will be designed specifically for the community.

Dr. Philip Greiner, director of the Health Promotion Center (HPC) and associate professor of nursing, said the project at Bassick is the HPC's first subcontract. "The Health Promotion Center has provided its services to the residents of Bridgeport since1994. Our goal is to provide health screenings and educational programs that help people of all ages enjoy good health. We are pleased to have this opportunity for an even higher level of involvement in the community."
