Regina Barreca, author, humorist, feminist, educator, to speak at Open VISIONS Forum | Press Releases

Regina Barreca, Ph.D., a specialist in feminine criticism, will discuss "Don't Tell Mama: Growing Up in an Italian-American Family," at Fairfield University's next Open VISIONS Forum, on Monday, Oct. 16, at 7:30 p.m. Dr. Barreca is committed to showing the world that feminists can have a sense of humor.

Dr. Barreca is the author of the best-selling "They Used to Call Me Snow White, But I Drifted: Women's Strategic Sense of Humor; Sweet Revenge: The Wicked Delight of Getting Even; and Perfect Husbands (and Other Fairy Tales)". Her works have been translated into Chinese, German, Spanish, Italian, Czech and Korean. She is also the editor of seven scholarly works.

Deemed a feminist maven by "Ms." Magazine, she is frequently quoted in such publications as "Time," "Cosmopolitan," "Glamour," "Self," and "Good Housekeeping" magazines and "USA Today." A media expert, she is a frequent guest on "20/20," "The "Today Show" and "Oprah" where she has appeared four times in four years.

Dr. Barreca is a professor of English Literature and Feminist Theory at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. She addresses business, medical and educational groups on diverse gender-difference topics. She writes a monthly column for "The Chicago Tribune," a weekly column for "The Hartford Courant," and has published articles in "The New York Times," "The Detroit Free Press," and the "Baltimore Sun."

She received her B.A. from Dartmouth College, where she was the first woman to be named an alumni scholar, an M.A. from Cambridge University, where she was a Reynolds Fellow, and a Ph.D. from the City University of New York. She lives in Connecticut with her husband, also a professor of English.
