"Ghetto Girls..." is topic of Bennett Center Judaic Studies Lecture

The Carl and Dorothy Bennett Center for Judaic Studies and the Women's Studies program at Fairfield University will sponsor a lecture by Dr. Riv-Ellen Prell on Wednesday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m., in the university's School of Nursing Auditorium titled, "Ghetto Girls, Jewish Mothers and Princess Daughters: the Challenge of Gender for America Jews." The speaker is a professor of American Studies, Jewish Studies and Women's Studies at the University of Minnesota.

Dr. Prell's lecture will explore Jewish gender stereotypes in the 20th century and explain how upward mobility and acculturation have shaped recent American Jewish culture. She will discuss how the struggle of immigrant Jews to become middle class Americans placed them in a consumer economy, which created conflict in Jewish women and men in the competing tasks of consuming and producing.
