Jazz Camp at Fairfield University | Press Releases

Fairfield University's popular jazz camp for high school and college-age students returns this summer from Wednesday, July 5, through Sunday, July 9. Directed by renowned bassist and composer Brian Torff, the camp offers classes and workshops in jazz improvisation, theory, rhythm and world music, history of jazz and jazz arranging and composition. On Sunday, July 9, the week culminates with students performing in concert.

Expected guest faculty include John Fumasoli, trombone, music theory and ensembles; Chuck Fisher, saxophone and jazz improvisation; Grisha Alexiev, drums, ensemble coaching; George Naha, guitar; and Rob Paparozzi, blues harmonica.

Brian Torff appears with his band, the blues-jazz power trio, Thunderstick, and performs in jazz festivals around the country. He has recorded two albums and his compositions have been performed by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Boston Pops and the Pittsburgh Symphony. A former co-chairperson for the music advisory board for the National Endowment for the Arts, he is the music program director at Fairfield University.

Students at the camp will have access to the University's resources and facilities, including the recreational complex with a 25-meter pool and tennis, racquetball and tennis courts. They will be housed in air-conditioned, double accommodation dormitory rooms with meals served three times a day and spend evenings at concerts, jam sessions, movies and more.
