The Fairfield University Glee Club under the baton of conductor Carole Ann Maxwell, will celebrate spring with a concert, "20th - The American Century," on Saturday, April 15, at 8 p.m. in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. Accompanist is Galen Tate, organist and director of music at St. Thomas More Church, Darien and a resident of Bridgeport.
In tribute to its seniors, the Glee Club will open the concert with "The Fairfield University Alma Mater," then perform, "Viva la musica," by Ivan Erod, "Ain't It a Pretty Night," featuring Michele Weiner, soprano, "A New Song," by Marvin Curtis, "Sing Me to Heaven," Kander and Ebb's "Razzle Dazzle," and "Elijah Rock" arranged by Moses Hogan.
A highlight of the evening will be a performance of Leonard Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms," sung in Hebrew, and accompanied by percussionists Barry Centanni and Tom Mulvaney. The piece premiered in 1965 at a concert of the New York Philharmonic conducted by Bernstein. Its modal melodies and harsh utterances, aided by odd meters and at times obsessive repetition, create an aura of ancient ritual.
The Chamber Singers, the Men's Ensemble, Sine Nomine Singers and Sweet Harmony, a group of women's voices, will also perform individually. The grand finale is "An American Tribute," adapted by Maxwell.
