David Denby, "New Yorker" film critic, to speak at next Open VISIONS Forum | Press Releases

David Denby, film critic for The New Yorker, will treat the audience to a preview of his Academy Award predictions at Fairfield University's next Open VISIONS Forum on Sunday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. He will also review the critic's role and explore filmmaking as art and entertainment.

Denby joined The New Yorker in 1998 as a staff writer and film critic, but began as a contributor to the magazine in 1993 with "Does Homer Have Legs?" This piece, published in 1996, became part of his book on reading the literary canon at Columbia University, Great Books: My Adventures with Homer, Rousseau, Woolf, and Other Indestructible Writers of the Western World. Of late, his treatises for the magazine have included subjects ranging from Charles Darwin to Leonard Bernstein.

Denby, also the film critic at New York magazine since 1978, is the editor of Awake in the Dark: An Anthology of Film Criticism from 1915 to the Present, published in 1977. In addition, he has written for the Atlantic Monthly, the New York Review of Books and The New Republic.

In 1990, Denby received a National Magazine Award for his writings on high-end audio. He holds a B.A. degree from Columbia University, an M.S. from the Columbia School of Journalism and an M.A. from Stanford University. He lives in Manhattan with his wife and sons.
