Classical piano, cello music on tap at Quick Center | Press Releases

One of classical music's most dynamic duos, Gilbert Kalish and Joel Krosnick will bring their considerable talents to the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts on Saturday, Feb. 19, at 8 p.m. in a concert of piano and cello music.

Pianist Gilbert Kalish leads a musical life of unusual variety and breadth. His profound influence on the musical community as an educator and as a pianist with myriad recordings and performances, has established him as a major figure in American music making. He has been the pianist of the Boston Symphony Chamber Players since 1969 and was a founding member of the Contemporary Chamber Ensemble, a group devoted to the new music that flourished during the 1960s and '70s. His 30-year partnership with mezzo-soprano Jan De Gaetani was widely recognized as one of the most remarkable collaborations of our time.

Joel Krosnick, master cellist, travels all over the world as part of the renowned Juilliard String Quartet and has performed to critical acclaim throughout the United States and Europe. A frequent recitalist and soloist and a faculty member of the Juilliard School, Krosnick plays regularly with Kalish at Columbia University's Miller Theatre where they are both in residence.

On the Quick Center program are Beethoven's "Sonata in G Minor," Opus 542, Ernst Bacon's "A Life," (a piece for violin, cello and piano discovered in 1984 by Joel Krosnick in the archives of the American Composers' Alliance Library), Debussy's "Sonate," and Mendelssohn's "Sonata in D Major," Opus 58. In reviewing one of their concerts, The Washington Post stated, "Krosnick and Kalish let sparks fly in a way one seldom hears in contemporary music. It was a high-risk performance of great intensity."

Prior to the concert the artists will meet with audience members at 7 p.m. as part of the "Art to Heart" discussion series.
