"The Boxcar Children" is next at Quick Center for the Arts' Outreach Program

Image: Boxcar Children "The Boxcar Children," based on the book by Gertrude Chandler Warner, will be staged in Fairfield University's Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts on Monday, Jan. 29 at 10 a.m., as part of the Quick Center's Outreach Program.

Produced by Theatreworks/USA, this musical follows the adventures of four resourceful brothers and sisters who find themselves orphaned and homeless at the peak of the Great Depression. Faced with the prospect of living with their wealthy grandfather whom they've never met and imagine to be an ogre, they flee when they learn he plans to send them to separate boarding schools.

Determined to stay together, they strike out on their on and find that life on the road can be hard. Their luck changes however, when they find an abandoned boxcar and turn it into a cozy little home with "treasures" from the junk yard. They all eventually find work with Dr. Moore, helping him harvest his cherry orchard. The siblings then encounter a crisis and rely on Dr. Moore to help them, only to discover he is really their grandfather. All ends happily when the siblings join their grandfather in his stately home.

Tickets for this outreach program are $5; study guides are available for teachers. The Outreach Program is funded in part by the Kiwanis Club of Fairfield, the Max and Victoria Dreyfus Foundation, Inc., Regina A. Quick, People's Bank and Schools in Partnership with Unilever H & PC. Tickets can be purchased by calling the box office at (203) 254-4010 or toll free at 1-877-ARTS-396.
