Amy Hurford and Chris Rivers will represent Fairfield University at NCAA Leadership Conference

Juniors Amy Hurford (S. Canterbury, New Zealand) and Chris Rivers (Middleburg, Fla.) will represent Fairfield University at the NCAA Foundation's annual Leadership Conference. The conference will be held May 28-June 1, 2000 at Disney's Coronado Springs Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. More than 300 participating female and male student-athletes will represent all NCAA divisions, 20 different sports and 11 countries.

The mission of the NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference is to develop a diverse group of student-athletes who will actively participate in and experience a multitude of challenging and thought-provoking activities that will enable them to become change agents on their campuses and in their communities. The conference will provide NCAA student-athletes with the opportunity to discuss and explore critical issues facing their peers; to enhance their leadership skills; and to promote better communications among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.

A total of 352 student-athletes have been invited to attend the 2000 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference. Student-athletes were nominated from NCAA member institutions that participate in the CHAMPS/Life Skills program. The 2000 NCAA Foundation Leadership Conference will focus on critical issues identified during the nomination process as well as topics recommended by members of the Divisions I, II and III NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committees.

Hurford became a key member of the Stags' women's basketball team this year, coming off the bench as a key reserve throughout the season. She appeared in 28 of the team's 33 games, averaging 3.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per outing. The forward capped the 1999-2000 season by earning a spot on the MAAC All-Academic team. The women's basketball team ended the year with a 25-8 record, tying the school record for most wins in a season, and captured the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season championship. The Stags advanced to the WNIT for the first time in school history.

Rivers started the 1999-2000 campaign as a reserve, but quickly worked his way into the starting lineup. The forward started 24 of his 29 appearances, helping the Stags finish the season with a 14-15 overall record and an 11-7 mark in MAAC play. He placed fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 8.7 points per game, and was the team's second-leading three-point shooters, netting 33 of 88 treys.
