Dr. Sidney Mintz, one of this country's foremost anthropologists and a professor emeritus at Johns Hopkins University, will speak at Fairfield University on Monday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m. in Canisius Hall, Room 15. His lecture, "The Caribbean Region: How People Create a Place of Their Own," is free and open to the public.

Dr. Mintz has done extensive fieldwork in the Caribbean, especially in Puerto Rico, Jamaica and Haiti. He is best known for his writings on the relation of sugar production to power and politics, the subject of his 1985 book, "Sweetness and Power: the Political, Social and Economic Effects on Sugar in the Modern World." More recently, he authored "Tasting Food, Tasting Freedom: Excursions into Eating, Power, and the Past." The New York Times called this latest book "a buffet of information. He shows how the forces of globalization are affecting our tastes, and that our food choices have enormous significance."

Dr. Mintz is the recipient of two outstanding awards in his field: The T. H. Huxley medal of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland, and the Distinguished Lecturer Award of the American Anthropological Association.

Sponsoring the lecture are International Studies, Campus Ministry, and Latin American Caribbean Studies, with a grant from the Humanities Institute as part of the seminar, "Haiti Alive!"
