Courses for credit offered during January Intersession | Press Releases

The School of Continuing Education at Fairfield University will offer intensive courses during the January intersession in which students can earn class credit in schedules that accommodate their lifestyles. The three-credit courses include an array of subjects, from personal finance to imperial fiction, and meet during the day from Wednesday, Jan. 5 through Tuesday, Jan. 11; or Saturdays and week nights from Jan. 8 through Jan. 15.

Dr. Michael Tucker, professor of finance in the School of Business, will present a course on Personal Finance. The course includes investments, such as stocks and bonds, housing purchases and mutual funds, with an emphasis on the basic principles of risk and return. Life, health and other insurance needs will be studied, along with pension and estate planning.

Imperial Fictions: Novels for the West & East, examines the tenor and temper of some British novels that are also tales of colonization. Taught by Dr. Gita Rajan, associate professor of English and director of the Asian Studies Program, the course will raise questions about imperial-colonial subjectivity, identity, home and location and dislocation and other issues of colonization.

Business Writing, taught by former Associated Press Bureau Chief and now full-time faculty member, Dr. James Simon, introduces students to writing for business memos, reports, news releases, resumes, and proposals. The workshop approach addresses students' current writing needs and includes segments on public speaking and telephone style.
