A Career Day will take place on Saturday, Jan. 30, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for Upward Bound Students at Fairfield University. Eric Lazaro, project coordinator for Upward Bound, noted that nine professionals in education, the law, the food industry, nursing, media and finance will present information on their careers and help students to consider the wide range of opportunities that await them.

The 86 Upward Bound students, who attend class at Fairfield University every Saturday, come from Bassick, Harding, Central and Kolbe High Schools. Among the panelists they will hear from will be two leaders from their own community: Attorney Preston Tisdale, a public defender, and Nancy Geter, president of the Board of Education, both for the City of Bridgeport.

Other panelists include: Jose Fernandez, a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and director of food services at Rye Hospital Center; Eddie Mae Barnes, RN, director of nursing, also Rye Hospital Center; Mary Eady, director of special services at Housatonic Community Technical College; Ebong U. Udoma, a broadcast and print journalist with National Public Radio; Chuck Dikko, a financial planner with Dikko & Associates; Wilhemina Thomas, RN, a nurse-midwife; and Renee Harris, MSW, a social worker with the State of Connecticut.

The program begins in the School of Nursing amphitheater. Following the panel discussion students will break up into smaller discussion groups with the panel members.

The day is planned, said Mr. Lazaro, not only to open up career options for the students, but to introduce them to people who, in some cases, grew up in inner cities and through education have succeeded in their career fields.
