Judge Alan H. Nevas to speak at Fairfield University | Press Releases

U.S. District Court Judge Alan H. Nevas will speak at Fairfield University on Wednesday, April 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Oak Room of the Barone Campus Center. His talk, "From the Bench & the Future of the Judiciary," is being presented by Fairfield University's Legal Studies Program and is open to the public.

A Stamford native, Judge Nevas graduated form Syracuse University in 1949 and from New York University Law School in 1951. After service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he practiced law in Westport with the firm of Nevas and Nevas until 1981, when he was appointed U.S. Attorney for Connecticut by President Ronald Reagan. In 1985, President Reagan appointed him as a U.S. District Judge.

During the years that he practiced in Westport, Judge Nevas served as Chairman of the Westport Board of Finance. In 1970, he was elected State Representative from Westport to the Connecticut General Assembly. In 1972, he was named Deputy House Majority Leader and in 1974, Deputy House Minority Leader.

In a 1976 poll of the membership of the General Assembly, conducted by Connecticut Magazine, Judge Nevas was named one of the ten most outstanding members of the Assembly. Judge Nevas currently serves as President of the Federal Judges Association.

The Legal Studies Program at Fairfield, just introduced last year, is an interdisciplinary program with faculty from the departments of philosophy, sociology, history, political science, economics, psychology, and the School of Business. The students study a broad range of topics, including human rights, environmental law, criminology, and international business law. All students learn basic legal research and writing, as well as analysis of cases, statutes, and legal and scholarly commentaries. Co-directors of the program are Rev. Thomas J. Regan, S.J., Ph.D., and Professor Joy Gordon, J.D., Ph.D.
