Dr. Jack Beal named interim dean of Continuing Education

The Rev. Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J., University President, announced on July 24 that Dr. Jack Beal, chair of the Department of Physics, had agreed to accept the position of interim dean of the School of Continuing Education, beginning on Aug. 1.

Dr. Beal takes over for former Dean John Michael Sweeney, who announced his retirement from the University earlier in July.

Dr. Beal has served Fairfield University not only in the Physics Department but also as associate dean for the College of Arts & Sciences. Dr. Beal, whose Ph.D. is in physics, has served the University as the liaison for Science Initiatives. He was a senior research fellow for the U.S. Fulbright Commission and has been actively involved in physics and corporate research, including with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Nuclear Reactor Laboratory and the Atomic Energy Institute.

As associate dean, he oversaw much of the technological expansion within the College, and he has served as liaison with Continuing Education. In addition, he has been an active participant in Fairfield's summer program in St. Petersburg and is active in an exchange program in Budapest.

Fr. Kelley has asked Academic Vice President Robert Wall to chair a search committee for a permanent dean of Continuing Education. That committee is in the process of being formed and will commence its work as soon as possible.

The School of Continuing Education staff has worked hard to maintain consistent quality programming both in the credit and non-credit areas, Fr. Kelley noted. "We anticipate that their fine efforts will continue," he said.
