Fairfield University publications win five awards

Fairfield University has received five awards - two national and three regional - for its publications. The national Admissions Marketing Report has awarded a certificate of merit to the winter 1996 combined issue of Fairfield Now and the President's Annual report which stressed the mentoring relationships between students and faculty or administrators. Barbara Kiernan, University editor, was the writer-editor for the issue and Linda Smaligo, assistant director of Printing & Graphics Services, was the designer.

The International Publishing Management Association honored the Campus Ministry Community Service booklet, awarding it second place in its catalogue category. It will be displayed at the organization's annual conference in June in Reno.

Linda Smaligo was the designer, and the project and writing were coordinated by the Rev. Paul E. Carrier, S.J., University chaplain, and the Rev. Joseph J. Schad, S.J., assistant University chaplain.

Women in Communications, Inc., based in Fairfield County, will present three certificates of merit to the University for publications which will also contend for the top honors, the Matrix Award, to be announced at the annual dinner in May. Honored were the series of academic departmental brochures designed by Margaret Galeano, and written by Alphonsus Mitchell, former University editor, in conjunction with faculty members and coordinated by Barbara Kiernan. Also honored was a publication developed for nursing admission recruitment and consisting of a series of inserts in an innovative folder. Nancy Gelston, designer in Printing & Graphic Services, designed and Barbara Kiernan wrote the copy in coordination with the School of Nursing. The third award was presented for a series of issues of Fairfield Now, the University's quarterly magazine, edited by Barbara Kiernan and designed by Linda Smaligo.
