"As You Like It" to be performed

Evil dukes, witty heroines, and sly jesters battle for kingdoms and hearts in Shakespeare's merry masterpiece of mistaken identities, "As You Like It," on Saturday, Jan. 18, at 8 p.m at the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts. This eclectic version of the Bard's classic is presented by the Obie award-winning Acting Company and directed by Romanian-born director Liviu Ciulei.

Tickets are $25, $22 and $19. Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups of 20 or more. For information call the box office at (203) 254-4010.

The enchanted Forest of Arden is the setting for comic mix-ups as the deposed Duke Senior, his daughter Rosalind and his niece Celia flee the intrigue-filled court of Duke Frederick for sanctuary and simplicity among the shepherds.

But peace is not on the program, as the trio are pursued by assassins and soon Rosalind must disguise herself as a man in order to set things right. This leads to complications when Rosalind must fend off the advances of the amorous shepherdess Phebe, while forced to conceal her own passionate feelings from her one true love Orlando.

"This is Shakespeare at his best, with characters in modern dress and sets that resemble a Magritte painting," said Deborah Sommers, program director at the Quick Center. "The show is a fun-filled frolic where, of course, true love conquers all."
