Hearst Scholarship Fund at Fairfield University receives $50,000 grant | Press Releases

The William Randolph Hearst Foundation, based in New York City, has awarded Fairfield University a grant of $50,000 to provide financial assistance to students in the School of Business.

In 1986, the foundation created the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Scholarship Fund at Fairfield and, with this latest grant, has now given the fund $150,000. Pending Fairfield meeting conditions, the foundation intends to add $50,000 to the endowed scholarship next year bringing the total to $200,000.

In thanking the foundation, the Rev. Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J., University President, commented that "ensuring adequate financial aid resources for the benefit of deserving students is among the highest of the University's priorities." He added, "Fairfield remains committed to recruiting and admitting the most talented students who apply for admission." Fairfield received 5,200 applications for 875 openings in the class of 2000 which arrived on campus Sept. 2. For 1996-97, Fairfield has budgeted over $11.1 million for student financial support.

In addition to an undergraduate degree, the School of Business offers graduate programs toward an MBA and a Master of Science in Financial Management.

Hearst Foundation Scholarships were awarded last seamster to Carolyn Salerno, a junior accounting major from Melville, N.Y., who was a Dean's List student and a member of the Accounting Club who worked part-time, and Karen Salcedo, a junior from Summit, N.J., who is double majoring in management and mathematics.

The Hearst Foundation was established in 1948. The foundation is an independent private philanthropy operating separately from the Hearst Corporation. Charitable goals for the foundation reflect the philanthropic interests of William Randolph Hearst - education, health, human services and culture.
