The mission of team Misfits of the Sea (MOTS) is to go beyond the creation of mere fishing gear, encompassing a philosophy of connection with nature, camaraderie amongst anglers, and conservation of shared resources.

Together, our shared love for the outdoors drives synergy, bringing visionary ideas to life.

— Duncan Hathaway '24

The idea for Team Misfits of the Sea (MOTS), producer of innovative fishing lure designs, was initially formed out of Duncan Hathaway's passion for fishing. Through years of angling experience, the Class of 2024 entrepreneur identified a need for artificial lures that keep pace with sportfishing's ever-evolving rod and reel technology.

The company was inspired by the Jersey Shore's "jig and pop" anglers, who use a special type of weighted fishing lure during extreme fishing expeditions, which can involve late-night departures and harsh weather conditions.

Hathaway shared that the MOTS team — which includes himself, Cian O'Donnell MSBA '25, and Kyler Erezuma '24 — embodies the "misfit spirit" and is dedicated to revolutionizing the design of lures, just as "jig and pop" anglers revolutionized sportfishing in the Northeast, even in the most dangerous conditions.

“MOTS transcends traditional fishing products; it embodies a lifestyle,” said Hathaway. "Our offerings go beyond mere gear, encompassing a philosophy of connection with nature, camaraderie amongst anglers, and conservation of the shared resources.”

According to Hathaway, the MOTS team goal is to provide anglers with just the right tackle to consistently land trophy-class fish. With his and O’Donnell’s strategic business backgrounds and Erezuma's engineering expertise, the team is confident that their combined skillset will ensure their products are cutting-edge.

“Together, our shared love for the outdoors drives synergy, bringing visionary ideas to life,” said Hathaway.

As the team focuses on their goals for the company, they are looking to bring innovative lures to market as well as build a strong community around their brand. They have been engaging with customers and incorporating feedback into their upcoming Showcase pitch on April 25.
