Internship and Study Abroad Opportunities

Study Abroad

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Such international exchange is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world. This scholarship provides awards for students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding who choose non-traditional destinations. Award amounts vary depending on length of study, which is between one month and one year, and student need.

Boren Scholarships* provide up to $20,000 to U.S. undergraduate students to study abroad for 8 weeks up to one year in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Boren Scholars study less commonly taught languages, including but not limited to Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili. In exchange for scholarship funding, all Boren scholarships must agree to work for the Federal government in the national security arena for a minimum of one year.

The Critical Language Scholarship* (CLS) Program is a fully funded summer overseas language and cultural immersion program for American undergraduate and graduate students. With the goal of broadening the base of Americans studying and mastering critical languages and building relationships between the people of the United States and other countries, CLS provides opportunities to a diverse range of students from across the United States at every level of language learning. Languages include Azerbaijani, Bangla, Hindi, Indonesian, Korean, Punjabi, Swahili, Turkish, Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian.

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA) grants scholarships of up to $10,000 awarded to applicants from groups underrepresented in study abroad with those destined for non-traditional locations given preference.

Freeman Awards for Study in Asia* are awarded to undergraduate students for study in Asian and Southeast Asian countries for summer, semester, and academic-year programs. The primary goal of Freeman Awards for Study in Asia (Freeman-ASIA) is to increase the number of U.S. undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing them with the information and financial assistance they will need. Award recipients are expected to share their experiences with their home campuses to encourage study abroad in East and Southeast Asia by others, and to spread greater understanding of Asian peoples and cultures within their home communities. Scholarships are awarded based on financial needs.

Fulbright Summer Institutes* for U.S. citizens provide the opportunity for U.S. undergraduates (aged over 18), with at least two years of undergraduate study left to complete, to come to the United Kingdom on a three or four week academic and cultural summer program.  Participants in these programs will get the opportunity to experience an exciting academic program at a highly regarded U.K. University, explore the culture, heritage and history of the U.K. and develop their academic ability by improving presentation, research and communication skills.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) is a publicly funded independent organization of higher education institutions in Germany that provides information and financial support to over 67,000 highly qualified students and faculty per year for international research and study in Germany for varying lengths of time.

Global Scholars Program (apply to Fairfield University) for short-term interdisciplinary summer internships, ideal for students with schedule or financial constraints that prevent them from studying abroad during regular semester.

Hulseman Fund for Study Abroad (apply to Fairfield University) provides funding for students who require financial assistance to travel to foreign countries as part of their educational experience at Fairfield. Primarily geared to students who wish to engage in short-term faculty-led immersion programs.

Internship and Research Opportunities for Current Students (Domestic)

Fairfield University Student Research Scholarships (apply to Fairfield University) provides support for student research projects that illustrate close collaboration with a faculty mentor.

The Amgen Scholars U.S. Program provides hundreds of selected undergraduate students interested in science and biotechnology with the opportunity to engage in a hands-on research experience at some of the nation's leading educational institutions. Currently, 10 universities in the U.S. host the 8-10 week summer research program. Amgen scholars will take part in important university research projects, gain hands-on lab experience and contribute to the advancement of science. They will also interact with and receive guidance from world-renowned faculty mentors and attend scientific seminars, workshops and other networking events. The Amgen Foundation has committed $50 million over 12 years to this global initiative to make this opportunity possible for thousands of students. The award varies depending on each host university. Each U.S. host institution has its own application process.

Barry Goldwater Scholarship* provides up to $7,500 in undergraduate college expenses to sophomores or juniors studying the natural sciences, mathematics or engineering with minimum GPA of 3.5.

Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange (CBYX) for Young Professionals is a full-year work-study scholarship program with a strong focus on cultural exchange. CBYX annually provides 75 young Americans with an understanding of everyday life, education, and professional training in Germany.

Charles Rangel Undergraduate International Affairs Summer Enrichment is a collaborative effort between Howard University and the U.S. State Department to promote careers as diplomats in the Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State. Program covers tuition, travel, housing plus stipend for 6 week summer program in Washington D.C.

Morris K. Udall Scholarship* awards up to $7,500 annually on the basis of merit to sophomore and junior level college students for leadership, public service and commitment to issues related to Native American nations or the environment.

Thomas Pickering Undergraduate Foreign Affairs Internship*provides funding to participants as they are prepared academically and professionally to enter the United States Department of State Foreign Service.  Award covers two summer internships; one domestic and one abroad.
