Learn the Folger Method for Teaching Shakespeare This Summer at Fairfield

High school teachers from across the nation are invited to enroll in a one-week institute to learn successful and innovative strategies for teaching Shakespeare.

Those teachers who teach Shakespeare, but haven’t been able to visit the Folger, now have a rare opportunity to experience the Folger Method.

The Graduate School of Education and Allied Professions, in collaboration with the Folger Shakespeare Library and Connecticut Writing Project-Fairfield, will offer a one-week, three-credit summer institute for high school teachers from July 30 to August 3, 2018. The institute is modeled on the Folger Library’s successful Teaching Shakespeare Institutes and will be taught by a special faculty of experts to provide teachers with a unique professional development opportunity this summer.

During this intensive institute, participants will explore Romeo and Juliet and The Tempest, as well as work with scenes from several of Shakespeare’s commonly taught plays. Each day will begin with a scholarly lecture and seminar, and will continue with curriculum, writing, and performance workshops. Participants will leave not only with new ideas, but with new tools and materials to use in their own classrooms. At the end of the week, institute participants will travel to Southport’s Pequot Library for a History of the Book workshop using materials from the Pequot’s rare book collection, including the Shakespeare First Folio, printed in 1623. 

“The Folger has been hosting teaching institutes at our home in Washington, D.C. for over 30 years, but this summer, we have taken our program on the road to Fairfield University,” said Michael LoMonico '68, senior consultant for national education at the Folger Shakespeare Library. “Those teachers who teach Shakespeare, but haven’t been able to visit the Folger, now have a rare opportunity to experience the Folger Method of teaching Shakespeare.”  

The Folger Shakespeare Library houses the world’s largest Shakespeare collection.  Located in Washington, D.C., it has revolutionized the way Shakespeare is taught. More than two million teachers and students each year benefit from in-person workshops, lesson materials, online classes and field trips, and the best-selling Folger editions of Shakespeare’s plays.

The summer institute will be taught by Fairfield University English Professor Shannon Kelley, PhD, and visiting experts including LoMonico; Sid Ray, PhD, professor of English and women’s and gender studies at Pace University; and Emily Davis, teacher of Shakespeare in the educational theatre graduate program at City College of New York.
