FAIRFIELD, Conn. (August 8, 2017)— Fairfield University’s Marion Peckham Egan School of Nursing and Health Studies is launching a new master’s concentration in informatics nursing, and is accepting applications for the fall 2017 semester.
Fairfield’s nursing informatics is a concentration in the Master’s of Science in Nursing Leadership program. As defined by Nursing Informatics: Scope and Standards of Practice , nursing informatics is the “specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage and communicate data, information, knowledge and wisdom in nursing practice.” Partnering with experts in informatics, analytics and computer engineering in the Dolan School of Business and School of Engineering, students will have the opportunity to learn cutting edge skills that will support a career in informatics nursing.
“We are excited to offer the leadership in informatics nursing (LEAD-IN) graduate program to current and future nursing leaders who are interested in applying their nursing knowledge and wisdom to information and communication technology to optimize patient outcomes and work flow. Unlike any other program in our area, the LEAD-IN program is specifically designed for nurses interested in a graduate degree program where they have opportunities to learn from leaders in informatics both in the classroom and in clinical setting through real-world practicum experiences,” stated Dr. Linda Roney, LEAD-IN specialty coordinator and assistant professor of nursing.
The concentration will provide nurses with the ability to apply informatics theory through clinical practicum experiences in a variety of health care settings. Graduates of this program meet all the qualifications to register for the national Informatics Nursing Certification Exam. The concentration in informatics nursing targets nurses with diverse career specialties, professional goals and personal interests. The new program requires a total of 39 credits, including 12 courses and a clinical informatics practicum. The rigorous curriculum includes courses in nursing leadership, information and database systems, and is currently the only program in the state to offer “hands on” learning experiences in the field for Informatics students.
Prospective students who would like to learn more about the new nursing informatics concentration or meet with faculty and advisors are encouraged to attend Fairfield's next Graduate Information Session to be held at the Aloysius P. Kelley, S.J. Center on campus on Saturday, September 23 from 8:30-11 a.m.
