The 2017 Fairfield Awards Dinner Raises More Than $1M for Scholarship | Press Releases

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (April 7, 2017) — With nearly 600 guests in attendance, the 29th annual Fairfield Awards Dinner on Thursday, March 30 at the Grand Hyatt in New York City raised $1,070,000 for The Multicultural Scholarship Fund and other scholarships at Fairfield, which are awarded to students of diverse backgrounds and those who demonstrate financial need.

The Fairfield Awards Dinner also recognizes alumni, faculty and staff for the highest levels of professional achievement, outstanding leadership, academic excellence and meritorious service. Since 1988 the event has raised close to $17 million for student scholarships.

This year’s Awards Dinner co-chairs were Timothy E. Lane ’85, P’16 of Montvale, N.J., who is president & CEO of Emeriti Retirement Health and managing director of TIAA, and William A. Malloy '80, P’17,’11 of New York, N.Y., who serves as partner at Aquiline Capital Partners LLC.

The honorees for the night were Katherine A. Schwab, PhD, professor of Visual and Performing Arts since 1988 and resident of Fairfield, Conn., who received the Distinguished Faculty/Administrator Award; Robert M. McMahon ’87, P’20, of Fairfield, Conn., who received the Alumni Service Award; and Douglas W. Hammond ’86, chairman and chief executive officer, NFP, a resident of Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y., who received the Alumni Professional Achievement Award.

Since the dinner began in 1988, close to $17,000,000 has been raised for scholarships at Fairfield through the generosity of alumni, parents, friends and corporate sponsors. This year, the seventy-fifth anniversary of Fairfield University, also celebrated and honored the memory and legacy of the founding chairman of the Fairfield Awards Dinner, Daniel P. Tully, who passed away last May. Tully was the chairman and CEO of Merrill Lynch, as well as a long-time trustee of Fairfield. Through his work in chairing the dinner in both 1988 and 1989, he firmly established the event as the key source of support for the Alumni Multicultural Scholarship Fund.

Fairfield University Interim President Lynn Babington, PhD, RN said in her remarks Thursday evening, "This Awards Dinner is such an important milestone in our academic year, because in many ways, it reminds us all — as a community — that we are engaged in a great mission, a mission that has been passed on from generation to generation for almost 500 years. That is the tradition of Jesuit education."
