FAIRFIELD, Conn. (November 9, 2016) — Fairfield University’s annual Lucy Katz “Person of the Year” Award has been presented to Melissa Quan, the of the Center for Faith and Public Life. This recognition, given by the Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Program, is given to a woman on campus who has made an outstanding contribution to women’s issues at Fairfield University.

In selecting Quan for the award, the faculty recognized her development of the Office of Service Learning which links community based service in true partnership to create transformative classroom experiences.

“Fairfield’s service learning program is now ranked among the best in the nation,” said Mary Frances Malone, Fairfield’s Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs. “Melissa Quan is known and respected within the region and beyond for her community engagement and for her excellent leadership in helping define standards of excellence in service learning for the academy.”

Said Emily Orlando, PhD., Associate Professor of English and the Director of the Women, Gender, and Sexuality program: “Through her fifteen year tenure at Fairfield University, Melissa has come to embody the Jesuit ideal of being a person for others. We particularly wish to recognize Melissa’s tireless efforts in support of social justice and the Center for Faith and Public Life’s Office of Service Learning.”

Lucy Katz, a lawyer and professor, joined Fairfield University as an assistant professor of business law. She was one of two original co-coordinators of the Women’s Studies Program and served as chair of the Department of Management in the Charles F. Dolan School of Business. In 2005, she was appointed to hold the inaugural Robert C. Wright endowed chair in Business Law, Ethics and Dispute Resolution. She was a courageous defender of social justice, with a particular focus on women’s issues, and lived out that focus in her life and in her prodigious work.
