Fr. Allen is receiving the degree to recognize his many years of service and support to St. Vincent’s Health Services, including the College and the Medical Center.

FAIRFIELD, Conn. (May 17, 2016) — Fairfield University’s Rev. Charles Allen, S.J., will be receiving an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree during Bridgeport’s St. Vincent’s College commencement ceremony on Friday, May 20, 2016.

Fr. Allen has been an active member of the St. Vincent’s community for many years as a celebrant for the baccalaureate mass for College graduations and as a spiritual director for alumni day of recollections. Additionally, he has served on the Institutional Review Board of St. Vincent’s Medical Center. Currently, Fr. Allen is the Special Assistant to the President of Fairfield University and is University Chaplain, in addition to being the Catholic chaplain to the town of Fairfield Emergency Services.

“It has been my joy during these past 21 years at Fairfield University to be of service to the faculty, staff and students at St. Vincent’s College,” said Fr. Allen. “The opportunity to offer the Graduation Mass for the students and conduct Days of Recollection and Communion Breakfasts for the alumni have made my life all the more meaningful. I am most grateful for this honor.”

Fr. Allen’s Jesuit service, which began when he was 17, has taken him to Mexico, Italy, France, Spain, England, Ireland, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. Fr. Allen has as Bachelor's Degree and a Master's Degree in Philosophy from Boston College, as well as Master's Degrees from the Gregorian (Rome), Brown and Columbia Universities in Theology, Mathematics, and Educational Administration, respectively.

To be considered for an honorary degree, St. Vincent’s looks for individuals who meet the Core Values of St. Vincent’s in their everyday lives. These include Service of the Poor, Reverence, Integrity, Wisdom, Creativity and Dedication.
